Alum Dr. Pratibha Varma-Nelson wins the George C. Pimentel Award!

Dr. Pratibha Varma-Nelson, who got her PhD from UIC in 1978, will receive the 2018 recipient of the George C. Pimentel Award in Chemical Education from the American Chemical Society (http://cen.acs.org/articles/95/i33/ACS-2018-national-award-winners.html. This recognizes her leadership in the practice of and research about Peer Led Team Learning. She will get the award at the Spring ACS meeting in New Orleans. Dr. Varma-Nelson and her husband John Nelson, also a UIC PhD (1981), have endowed a scholarship at UIC to support peer teaching in science. Dr. Varma-Nelson is also in the 2017 group of ACS Fellows. In 2008 she received the Norris Award of the ACS Northeastern Section and in 2011 she was awarded the Stanley C. Israel ACS Regional Award for advancing diversity in the chemical sciences. Dr. Varma-Nelson is Professor of Chemistry at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis and Founding Executive Director of STEM Education Innovation and Research Institute. Both Dr. Varma-Nelson and Dr. Nelson received their Ph.D. under the guidance of Dr. Clifford Matthews.
