Prof. Preston Snee’s ACS Nano article reveals hidden dynamics of doped semiconductors

CdSe/ZnS

Prof. Preston Snee’s group, in collaboration with researchers from Argonne National Lab and Northwestern University, have revealed a new dynamic that affects how doped semiconductors conduct charge: http://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsnano.7b04414.  The group used excited state X-ray absorption spectroscopy to demonstrate that the bonds of semiconductor dopants are altered when charge flows through them. Although this dynamic is detrimental to conduction, the group proposed methods to minimize charge carrier modulation of the dopant bonding that will give rise to smarter, more energy efficient advanced nanomaterials for electronic devices.
