The Paaren and Nachtrieb Awards

The Paaren Scholarship application is intended for UIC Chemistry majors (Chemistry BS, Chemistry BA, Teaching of Chemistry, and Biochemistry BS) who currently have an overall GPA of 3.2 or above and will have junior or senior standing in Fall 2017 AND Spring 2018:

The Herbert E. Paaren Scholarships are for UIC chemistry majors, including BS Biochemistry majors pursuing a career in science. (Please note that BS Biochemistry majors pursuing a career in medicine are not eligible.) Three Paaren Scholarships are available for this year's competition. These $5,000 scholarships ($2,500 applied to Fall 2017, $2,500 applied to Spring 2018) will be awarded based on academic standing. The preference, but not a requirement, for these awards will be for students who are among the first generation of their families to go to college. An additional consideration is your career goal.

Please note that the scholarship amount will be applied to the UIC student account of the award winner(s).  Student must be registered for a course (any course) at UIC in Fall 2017, and a course in Spring 2018 in order for the scholarship amounts to be applied to the student's account.

We will post the application for the Paaren Scholarship shortly.

The Paaren Summer Research Stipend application is intended for UIC Chemistry majors (Chemistry BS, Chemistry BA, Teaching of Chemistry, and Biochemistry BS) who currently have an overall GPA of 3.2 or above and will have junior or senior standing in Fall 2017:

The Herbert E. Paaren Summer Research Awards are open to those Chemistry majors who have joined a research group in the Chemistry department, whether for credit or otherwise. The purpose of these $3,200 scholarships is to support students who will be doing undergraduate research at UIC over the summer. During the beginning of the Fall 2017 semester, award winners will give a short presentation of their summer work at the UIC Chemistry Undergraduate Research Symposium. This award requires a letter of recommendation from the Chemistry professor with whom you are/will be working. Students must be available to conduct undergraduate research full-time with their research advisor during the 8-week Summer 2017 semester (June 12 - Aug 4, 2017).

Please note that the scholarship amount will be applied to the UIC student account of the award winner(s).  If the student is registered for a course (any course) at UIC during Summer 2017, then the amount will be applied to the student account in Summer 2017.  If the student is NOT registered for a course at UIC in Summer 2017, then the amount will be applied to the student account in Fall 2017 (contingent on the student being registered for a course at UIC in Fall 2017).

We will post the application for the Paaren Summer Research Stipend shortly.
