Seminar with Professor Kyle M. Lancaster, Dept. of Chemistry and Chemical Biology – Cornell University

Title: Living on Nitrogen

Abstract: Not all organisms derive energy from carbon based fuels––some microorganisms can subsist entirely off of inorganic fuels, specifically ammonia. This lecture will summarize recent advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms underpinning energy transduction from ammonia by nitrifying bacteria. Focus will be placed on the selective oxidation of hydroxylamine, the first obligate intermediate of the process. The lecture will conclude with speculation concerning the nature of reactive copper species that mediate the initial hydroxylation of ammonia to hydroxylamine.
