The Paaren and Nachtrieb Awards

Students may submit an application for any award for which they qualify; some may qualify for all awards. Please read the descriptions below carefully, and note that all final award amounts and how they will be distributed will be determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid on the basis of your unmet financial need for the 2020-2021 academic year as well as other relevant factors. Award winners will be honored at the Chemistry Undergraduate Awards Day Ceremony on April 16, 2020. More information about this will be released closer to the Ceremony date.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Paaren Scholarship application is intended for UIC Chemistry majors (Chemistry BS, Chemistry BA, and Biochemistry BS majors pursuing a career in science--please note that BS Biochemistry majors pursuing a career in medicine are not eligible) who currently have an overall GPA of 3.2 or above and will have junior or senior standing in Fall 2020 AND Spring 2021.

Multiple Paaren Scholarships are available for this year's competition. These $5,000* scholarships ($2,500* applied to Fall 2020, $2,500* applied to Spring 2021) will be awarded based on academic standing. The preference, but not a requirement, for these awards will be for students who are among the first generation of their families to go to college. An additional consideration is your career goal.

In addition to completing the application form, you must also submit a narrative that includes:

• A list of any honors you’ve received or other evidence of scholarship.
• Your professional and academic plans and goals in acquiring a chemistry degree.
• In general, why you believe you deserve this scholarship & why you have chosen chemistry as your course of study.
• The narrative must not exceed 500 words and must be typewritten double-spaced.
• The narrative you attach to this application must specifically reference the Herbert E. Paaren Scholarship. The reference should be made at the opening of the narrative.

Please note that the scholarship amount will be applied to the UIC student account of the award winner(s).  Students must be registered for a course (any course) at UIC in Fall 2020 and a course in Spring 2021 in order for the scholarship amounts to be applied to the student's account.

The Paaren Summer Research Stipend application is intended for UIC Chemistry majors (Chemistry BS, Chemistry BA, and Biochemistry BS) who currently have an overall GPA of 3.2 or above and will have junior or senior standing in Fall 2020.

The Herbert E. Paaren Summer Research Awards are open to those Chemistry majors who have joined a research group in the Chemistry department, whether for credit or otherwise. The purpose of these $3,200* scholarships is to support students who will be doing undergraduate research at UIC over the summer. During the beginning of the Fall 2020 semester, award winners will give a short presentation of their summer work at the UIC Chemistry Undergraduate Research Symposium.  Students must be available to conduct undergraduate research full-time with their research advisor during the 8-week Summer 2020 semester (June 15 - Aug 5, 2020).

In addition to completing the application form, you must also:

A) Submit a narrative that includes the following.

•Your professional and academic plans and goals in acquiring a chemistry degree.
•A short description of your proposed research for the summer.
•List any honors you’ve received or other evidence of scholarship.
•The narrative must not exceed 500 words and must be typewritten, double-spaced, and must specifically reference the Herbert E. Paaren Summer Research Award. The reference should be made at the opening of the narrative.

B) Request a letter of recommendation from the professor whose research group you have joined.

Please note that the scholarship amount will be applied to the UIC student account of the award winner(s).  If the student is registered for a course (any course) at UIC during Summer 2020, then the amount will be applied to the student account in Summer 2020.  If the student is NOT registered for a course at UIC in Summer 2020, then the amount will be applied to the student account in Fall 2020 (contingent on the student being registered for a course at UIC in Fall 2020).
