2021 was a great year for Jiang Research Lab. Sayantan Mahapatra and Jeremy Schultz, two graduate students have received multiple awards at the International forum.

At the American Vacuum Society 67th International Symposium and Exhibition, Sayantan won the prestigious 2021 AVS Russell and Sigurd Varian Award after a competition with eight national student finalists. The award was established in 1982, with a purpose to recognize and encourage excellence in continuing graduate studies in the sciences and technologies of interest to AVS. In the AVS virtual award ceremony (10/28/2021), Sayantan was recognized for his outstanding research in single-molecule spectroscopy.

Jeremy received the Wayne B. Nottingham Prize at the 81st Physical Electronics Conference. This prize is awarded to the best student paper, based on a PhD dissertation, presented at the conference. This prize represents a seminal honor since many Nottingham winners have gone on to become leaders in the field of surface science. Furthermore, Jeremy received the Barbara Stull Graduate Student Award from the Society for Applied Spectroscopy in recognition of his outstanding research in spectroscopy. Both are the first time for a UIC graduate student to receive these awards. Jeremy was also recognized as a finalist for the Journal of Physical Chemistry and Experimental Subdivision Award for Outstanding Graduate Research in its inaugural year. Finally, through a nationwide competitive postdoctoral program, following the successful defense of his dissertation and graduation, Jeremy will move on to work as a National Research Council Postdoc at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
