Areas of Study
Our highly active research program, which is one of the largest in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, encompasses a broad range of areas, including the traditional sub-disciplines (Analytical, Bio, Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry) as well as several new interdisciplinary areas, including chemical biology, nanotechnology and neurochemistry. Please choose a field of interest on the left for more information.
Fundamental research in organic synthesis is complemented by collaboration with local drug discovery consortia. New instrumentation and labeling strategies are developed for biomedical and nanomaterials imaging and spectroscopy. This work includes the construction of microscopes based on novel optical, atomic probe, or mass imaging strategies. It also includes development of selective contrast agents based on chemical, biochemical, and nanocrystalline moieties. These new spectroscopic and imaging methods are applied to a variety of biomedical problems on the genomic, proteomic, and metabolomic level. New nanocrystalline structures, thin films, and inorganic complexes are being synthesized for applications in batteries, photovoltaics, and other sustainable energy materials. Computational efforts supplement and extend the above work to detailed studies of carbon based nanomaterials, biological membranes, protein folding, drug delivery modalities, and other problems. Finally, collaborations using the extensive facilities at Argonne National Laboratories are facilitated by its close proximity to UIC.
